On Thanksgiving in our house, turkey may be the star, but the ham often steals the show. A good quality, smoked ham is hard to mess up, and easily feeds a big crowd. I think it’s why we always have ham on Thanksgiving as a backup!
Ham is a great choice for the holidays because it’s super easy and versatile. My favorite brand is Petit Jean, because it’s delicious and made right in my home state of Arkansas. I’ve said it many times, but really, it’s the best for ham, bacon, and hot dogs. And you can buy them at Wal-Mart in Ark (always a plus for me!).
I like to cook a ham because, even though it’s kind of pricey, you get at least 3 different meals from it. Today, I’ll show you meal number 1: Baked Ham. I also served baked sweet potatoes and Garlic Lemon Roasted Cauliflower.
For these recipes, what you are looking for is a 7-9 pound, bone-in, spiral sliced, smoked ham.
BAKED PETIT JEAN HAM
7-9 pound Petit Jean ham (smoked and spiral cut)
Unwrap the ham and read the cooking instructions. It will tell you how long they suggest you cook it to heat it through, the baking temperature, and how much the ham weighs.
Remove the plastic disc covering the bone (you might not see it at first).
Place the ham cut side down in a roasting pan with a rack. I call it “face down”, but hams don’t really have faces… You can use a casserole dish if you don’t have a roasting pan, but I like the way it turns out better in a pan with a rack.
Cover the pan tightly with aluminum foil.
Cook at 325 for 10-12 minutes per pound (the pounds will be listed on the tag on the packaging, as well as exactly how long you should cook it per pound), so you’ll end up cooking it for an hour and a half or so.
Let the ham rest for 10-20 minutes. A spiral cut ham is already sliced, so it’s easy to serve
